Foods to Eat

In today’s day and age one of the biggest struggles is knowing WHAT to eat. It seems like every school, dietician, fitness plan, and person advises differently. I can vividly remember hating milk to the point it made me sick at the smell but feeling the need to attempt to drink at least once year because “it was healthy”. I’ll tell you right now if your body rejects something that hard … there’s probably a reason. Listen.

It’s not our fault we’ve become so confused. Our world has created such toxic foods that in 1940 – for the first time ever – our government had to create guidelines for how much of each food we should be eating. Note back to the truth about food, our first processed foods were consumed in 1910. Spoiler alert it was horribly wrong. That’s why it’s changed over 5 times since 1943 and the ratios and food groups change each time with it.

Crazy part is .. it’s still wrong! Today in 2020 a cup of dairy is still listed as the recommended food group for each meal. Read the fine print though because they listed an asterisk next to it which reads “Switch to 1% or skim milk, cheese, and other dairy options. Avoid full-fat dairy products.”

Translation: don’t have the full poison. Have half. It’ll still keep our billion-dollar industries alive and fingers crossed harm you at a slower rate?

The thing is inflammatory food is inflammatory food. Whether you have half of it or all of it.

SO to summarize, yes there is such a thing as healthy food and no we’re not crazy for being so confused. But we’re going to change that!

FOODS TO EAT / TO HEAL / TO THRIVE / TO LIVE:

1. LOTS OF WHOLE VEGETABLES. Vegetables are God’s greatest treasures of food for us. The word alone “vegetare” directly translates as animating or life-giving. And that’s exactly what they do. Vegetables nourish, heal, and strengthen our bodies. They were created as the staple of our diet and should be our main source of nutrients.

Vegetables can be eaten raw over a salad with lemon and olive oil. Vegetables such as dark leafy greens (kale, spinach, kohlrabi etc.); broccoli and cauliflower; cucumbers, onions, bell peppers, radishes, tomatoes, squash, carrots, leaks, sprouts of all kinds, and so on. Vegetables such as asparagus, green beans, brussel sprouts can be steamed for easier digestion.

2. SPROUTED BREADS. All kinds of English muffins, etc. These kinds of gluten free products can be found at the health food store. My particular favorite is millet bread that I buy from Deland Bakery in bulk. You can purchase millet bread, bagels, buns and more directly from their website.

3. PRESERVATIVE FREE BREAD. “Ezekiel” and “Genesis” gluten free brands are good examples. You can find these types of bread in the frozen food section as they contain no chemical preservatives. This is a great snack to toast and enjoy with a little salt and olive oil or vegan butter (Earth Balance red container).

4. CEREALS. Made with millet, quinoa, etc and no gluten. Use almond milk on them, not soy milk (soy milk is very controversial. Why eat controversial when you have a multitude of other options?). Just be careful that none of the cereal nor the milk has artificial or real sweeteners and preservatives.

5. FRUIT. Let’s clear this up on the whole fruit debate of whether or not it’s “healthy” because of the natural sugars found in it. Yes it is healthy. No I wouldn’t eat 7 pieces of fruit a day and blast my pancreas with lots of fruit sugar. If we want to have a rule on what’s “healthy” for fruit … one piece of whole fruit a day is a great amount.

I would also not recommend frequently drinking straight fruit juice as it is extremely condensed containing a high amount of fruit sugar that would also abruptly blast your pancreas. Same goes for vegetable juice – be aware that juicing vegetables contains a high level of nutrients but it also strips the vegetable of fiber which is crucial for our bowel systems.

***Consuming the fruit or vegetable in it’s whole state is the best option. Why go to a juice or powder when you can go to the original source***

And that’s the scoop on what you TRULY should eat. Eat in this manner and your body will heal, thrive, and strengthen itself. It may not always be easy. Trust me I’ve had plenty of struggles at restaurants, friend’s houses, etc. but eating as described in this list will efficiently and thoroughly cleanse and detoxify your entire system!
